Writing

If you’re looking for an article or essay for a newsletter, journal, blog, or other publication on any of the following topics, please get in touch: plants (especially house plants, orchids, and native plants), gardening, landscape restoration and ecology, permaculture, wildlife, and similar subjects. Basic rate: $0.50/word; work requiring extensive research will be higher.

Editing

My primary areas of interest include plants, insects, birds, and other science and natural history topics; astrology, tarot, and other occult/metaphysical topics; and science fiction and fantasy. I am open to reviewing other work, including business/organizational documents and websites.

Rates listed below assume the document can be edited in Word or LibreOffice using Track Changes. Markup on hard copy or PDF, or documents requiring conversion to Word/LibreOffice, may require a higher rate.

Copyediting

For when you want a look at grammar, formatting, misspellings, inconsistencies, and the like, but you may also need some help fine-tuning occasional sentences and phrases throughout the document. Basic rate: $5 – $7 per 250 words depending on amount of editing required; I will review a sample of the work before setting the rate.

Content editing (aka Line editing)

For when you want significant help with phrasing and/or organization; whole paragraphs or sections need attention, or many sentences throughout need tweaking. Basic rate: $10 – $12.50 per 250 words depending on amount of editing required; I will review a sample of the work before setting the rate.

Desktop Publishing & Document Organization

Desktop publishing

For when you have text and probably some pictures or other graphical elements and you want it laid out in a brochure, article, handout for a class, mailing, booklet, etc. I use InDesign for this work. Rates will vary depending on the complexity of the job.

(Please note that I am not a graphic designer, and if you are starting something complex completely from scratch, and don’t know what fonts, colors, etc., you really want, I am not the best person to help. I am comfortable creating basic styles for headers and things like that, but my skills in desktop publishing are best suited to creating documents based on existing graphic standards and ensuring they are applied consistently.)

Document organization

You’ve got a how-to document, or a report, a form, a checklist, or something else you send out repeatedly but with new content each time. In this case, it isn’t the content that needs attention (though I am happy to review that, too!), it is how it is laid out. Great for setting up Word templates! Rates will vary depending on the complexity of the job.
